| What causes sagging cheeks and sunken cheeks? |
Babies and young children have chubby cheeks. That is because a structure called the malar (cheek bone) fat pad rests firmly on top of the cheekbone in children and young adults. People begin to think of a cheek lift after their face begins to age.
Skin ageing causes sagging of the facial skin. Gravity pulls the cheek skin down as we age, and the cheek fat pad slides down from the cheek bone into the face. The effect is a sunken cheek on and below the cheek bone where the fat pad used to be.
Another effect is fullness and sagging skin below the cheekbone in the mid cheek – closer to the nose and mouth - called the nose to mouth lines or nasolabial fold.
As the sagging cheek gets worse, the skin folds fall down to the chin and jaw line creating what are called marionette lines and jowls

What causes deep hollow cheeks?

Deep depressions or hollowness in the cheeks may occur in the face due to the drooping of tissues from age, disease or as an effect of some medical conditions. Lipodystrophy, which may develop in HIV positive patients from taking antiretroviral medications, is the most common cause of severe Hollow Cheek Syndrome.
