Unfortunately, the neck is often one of the first features to show the signs of age. The neck lift is a procedure that helps to improve your neck contour. As you age, the skin and muscle below the chin begins to relax and sag downward. In addition, excess fatty deposits can exaggerate this effect. Unfortunately, this natural process results in unwanted fullness along the neckline that contributes to a tired, aged look. What is a neck lift?A neck lift is a procedure that lifts and rejuvenates a sagging and/or full neck and Who are the best candidates for a neck lift?Good candidates for the neck lift include healthy men and women who are bothered by unwanted sagging of the neck and/or jaw line. Neck lift patients often complain of looking prematurely aged due to excess laxity that drapes down below the jaw and/or undesirable fullness below the chin. What happens in a consultation for a neck lift?Dr. Bezic will take into account your concerns and complaints and describe the various looks that can be achieved, the amount that can be removed, and the amount of tightening you can expect. The particular surgical technique to be used will be described along with the incision placement and the potential risks or complications. How is a neck lift done?Neck lift surgery is often done in conjunction with facelift surgery, but it can be performed as an isolated procedure. Usually a hidden incision is made beneath the chin, through which the muscles are tightened and the fatty deposits are removed. In some cases, an additional hidden incision is required around the bottom of the ear to remove excess skin. Are there scars after a neck lift?Though the incisions made for the neck lift will result in scars, they tend to be well concealed, as they are mainly located behind the ear and sometimes beneath the chin. What is the recovery like after a neck lift?During the first few days after the neck lift, patients should sleep with the head slightly elevated at a 30-degree angle to minimise swelling. Patients are also encouraged to minimize rotation of the neck. Any pain or discomfort that patients experience is well controlled with prescription medication. Swelling and bruising may still be noticeable for up to ten days after surgery. In most cases, patients will note a sensation of feeling ‘tight’ for several weeks, though they will not appear tight. This is an expected feeling that will slowly fade away as your neck becomes more familiar with its new contour and position. When will I be able to return to work? Most patients are able to return to work within seven to ten days after the neck lift, sometimes sooner for those patients not bothered by residual swelling. When can I exercise again? For the first twenty-four to forty-eight hours, you will mostly be at bed rest. For the first week you should plan on remaining relatively at rest at home. After that you may be up and about the house but not outside except for your doctor visits. The second and third week is a time where gradual resumption of physical activity takes place. No sports or exercise is allowed at this period of time but, if you feel up to it, your may go out to a movie, for an easy walk, a casual dinner, etc. After three weeks gradual resumption of any athletic activity you are comfortable with is allowed. |
